Final Push – So much going on this time of year, it’s nice to know that our hard work is almost over. We are at the final push of marching band season. Just a couple weeks left. After that, a few football games but marching contests will be over and therefore after school practices will be reduced considerably. There are too many people to thank for all the hard work so far. Thank you to the 15+ parents who are always there to help with injuries, sick students, broken equipment, and all the crazy requests from the directors! The staff and students thank you very much! The uniforms smelled so much better Friday night after all the families took them home to wash them. Thank you to those that volunteered your washing machines and time! The students continue to work hard on performing their show. We had three performances this weekend and each one improved from the last. We know what details to focus on for Monday’s practice so that we can be set up for a great performance at UIL this Tuesday. We hope that we will have many parents at the performance this Tuesday evening at 7:30pm. Multiple principals have signed up to come watch our students perform. Let’s all prepare for a really great performance this Tuesday!

Health – Many students have been getting sick with a stomach virus and strep throat. The biggest way to help prevent this is to wash out our water bottles / jugs and never share with other students. Too many students share water this way and it is spreading germs. Also, wash your hands, eat healthy, drink water, and get plenty of rest.

Band fees – I sent out an updated band fees statement last week. It is critical that students pay these fees. If you see anything wrong or don’t understand the statement, please email me and let me know. I encourage students to bring their payments in before school and hand it to a director. Band fees must be paid before students are allowed to go on the spring trip.

Upcoming itineraries – UIL is on Oct. 17th and then the USBands SW Championship at AT&T stadium on Oct. 21st. The final performance of “All In A Dream” is at Coppell on Oct. 29th. I will be sending itineraries as soon as I can for all events. Please read them for details regarding call times, pick up times, and meal arrangements. For special diet concerns, please log in to Charms and “special diet?” in the update personal info section.

Football & Contest #2 – What a busy weekend! We ALL deserved a day off on Monday. I hope the parents and volunteers that assisted on both Friday and Saturday were able to get much needed rest. The staff is very pleased with both performances on Saturday as well as Friday’s game. We added a very large amount of content to the show during the week and the kids did a really great job performing it. As for competition, in prelims, Lamar ranked 4th in class but 2nd in both percussion and color guard. In finals, Lamar ranked 7th overall, 5th in percussion, 4th in color guard, and 4th in visual. This a great first showing at USBands competition. We will continue the USBands national circuit with our performance at the SW Championship and the Coppell Showcase. Mostly urgently, we have UIL Region Marching Contest on Tuesday the 17th at Vernon Newsom Stadium in Mansfield. We would love to have a huge crowd from Lamar. We perform at 7:30pm.

Spring Trip – Trip contract and deposit is DUE TOMORROW! The band & orchestra have planned a combined spring trip to Orlando this spring to compete in the Festival Disney Music Contest. The dates are April 13-16. We will fly there and stay on at a Disney hotel. We will spend two days at Disney and two days at Universal Studios Orlando. The cost will be between $1200-$1500 depending on how good of a deal we get on airline ticket prices. That depends on how fast we can get deposits on the trip. Students were given trip contracts last week. I have attached a trip contract to this email. Please get this turned in as quickly as possible. If any parents would like to attend as a chaperone, please notate that on the student’s contract.

Rehearsals – We only have 29 hours of rehearsal left this season. Only 4 rehearsals before UIL. This week rehearsals are Tuesday 3:30pm-6:30pm, Wednesday and Thursday 3:30pm-6:00pm. Rehearsal attendance is mandatory. If you have transportation concerns, let us know and fill out this form. https://goo.gl/hRA3NU

Contest #1 – We made it to competition season! It was a beautiful day for marching band. The Mansfield Preview of Champions had 28 high schools represented. We had a good performance and the judges gave us good feedback. Most of all, the students represented LHS with class. We had a parent from another school tell us that the Lamar students were the best behaved / well-mannered students all day. That made the staff very proud! Thank you to the parents who served lunch and dinner! All-in-all, I am pleased with our first outing and I know we learned a lot about ourselves and what we can do better next weekend.
