Announcements 9/17/2017

Rehearsals – This week rehearsals are Tuesday 3:30pm-6:30pm, Wednesday and Thursday 3:30pm-6:00pm. Rehearsal attendance is mandatory. If you have transportation concerns, let us know and fill out this form. https://goo.gl/hRA3NU

Game #3 – Wow, what a night. Broken truck, flat tire on the trailer, and an exciting football game as we captured our first win of the season. I just want you to know that your students handled themselves very well in adverse conditions. Once the instruments got to the stadium, the students played loud and proud. The parents that were there did a heroic job doing whatever was necessary for these kids to have a good evening. Special thanks to Chris & Michelle Van Zandt, Jerry Murphy, The Gordon family, the bus drivers, Mr. Carlton, Mr. Bibb, Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Duke, and all the other parents who helped with the trailer situation last Thursday. This week is a much deserved break as this is the bye week for varsity football!

Car Wash – This Saturday is our annual fall car wash. The students have signed up for a morning or evening shift. Parents will pick a shift to work as a safety monitor and money collector.

Parents/Adults click here to sign up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f4bafa728a3f49-sep

Restaurant Nights – We look forward to everyone coming out on Sept. 20th to the Chipotle on North Collins to support the Lamar Band. Come in anytime from open to close and show the attached flyer and we get 50% of the proceeds. Share the flyer with EVERYONE!

Yankee Candle fundraiser – One of our big fundraiser last year was the Yankee Candle fundraiser. We are kicking it off tomorrow in class. We want all students and parents to participate. The candle will be in before the holidays so it should be a popular way for people to get gifts early. More details coming tomorrow. https://www.yankeecandlefundraising.com/home.htm

Private Lessons – We have a full lineup of master teachers for our private lesson program this fall. We very strongly encourage all students to take advantage of the private lesson staff. Lessons are run through the Arlington Music Enrichment Program (AMEP). Lessons are $17 a week. Students must fill out the paperwork to be set up in the AMEP system.

Jazz Band – The Lamar jazz students participated in the TMEA Region 5 Jazz Band Auditions. We had Dillon Lee make first chair bass trombone in jazz 2, AJ Cash made 2nd chair trumpet in jazz 2, Ryan Fuhrmann mad 2nd chair tenor trombone in jazz 2, and Dyamond Mays made 1st chair bari sax in jazz 1 and qualified to record for the all-state jazz band! Congrats on these fine musicians and their hard work!

Our marching band drill is available on a new app. The directors and student leaders have been testing it and it is AMAZING! I encourage all students to try the app. Once they download it they can ask a section leader how to download the Lamar Show 2017. http://www.drillbooknext.com/

The most incredible innovation in music technology has been the Tonal Energy App. It is a very high tech tuner, metronome and much more. Students are often ask to use this app during class if they have it on their smartphones. http://tonalenergy.com/

Game #1 – Great job Lamar Band on the first game of the season! Your performance in the stands and on the field were excellent.  I was pleased with our first performance of the national anthem. Let’s see what we can do this Friday at our second home game.

Restaurant Nights – We have some upcoming restaurant nights coming up. We receive a percentage of sales from these events. Please spread the word and go eat to support the band! The first event is Tuesday, September 5th, 4:00pm-8:00pm at Which Wich in Lincoln Square.

Schedule and Calendar – The fall calendar is finally available. I wanted to have it finalized much earlier but there were many variables that factored into the rehearsal schedule and events calendar for marching season. As always one of our big concerns is safety for the students. Our parking lot that we practice on is slated for repair next summer. In the meantime, it is full of potholes making marching somewhat dangerous. Therefore, we are planning on practicing on it as little as possible and scheduled rehearsals on Cravens field Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Monday and Thursday are full with football games. Due to this fact, this fall our day off will be on Mondays. Our 8 hours of afterschool practice will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That being said, there are other factors that make that “normal” schedule have to change. Before Labor Day, AISD does not allow marching bands to practice until after 6:00pm. You can see on the calendar that there are a few weeks with altered rehearsal days as well.

The Voice of The Pride of Lamar – Our loyal announcer, Brent Dow, is retiring from being the voice of the Lamar band and the ViQueens. His kids have not been students at Lamar for many years, yet, he kept on coming to every game to announce us at half-time. We greatly appreciate all he did for the band and we will miss his presence…particularly the Thriller show! We are looking for a parent with a big voice that would like to be our announcer during halftime this fall. Email a director and let us know if you are interested.

Terry Ip photography – Mr. Ip will not be taking individual portraits in the full marching band uniform like we have done in the past. Too few families were purchasing the photo packages for it to be a viable business venture. He is willing to take these photos in his studio if there are families interested in purchasing a photo shoot package. For more info, contact him at  terryipphotos@gmail.com
