Announcements 11/13/16

All-City & All-Region – All band students are strongly encouraged to audition for All City and All Region Honor Band Auditions. This is a very important educational experience for you musicians. Verify with Lang that you are entered for the auditions. This week on Monday the 10-12 grade students will audition. Tuesday is 9th grade. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from Martin HS. The directors will be judging the entire time. If you have any issues during the audition, go to the contest office.

Spring Trip – This spring, the band & orchestra will be traveling to Nashville! Trip contracts and info are available from Mr. Lang. The $150 deposit is due ASAP! Limited seats available for this year’s trip. The total for the trip is $750. Students must be academically eligible at the time of the trip to be able to attend. Students must also be paid up on their band activity fees.

Volunteer Opportunity – Thank you to all the students and parents who helped Mr. Nagel run the JH All-Region auditions this weekend at Lamar. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Drumline – Congrats to the Viking drumline on their competition in Lewisville this past weekend. The drumline placed 5th and won the award for best snare line! Go Vikes!

Jazz Band – All-Region jazz clinic & concert this week.

Concerts – The Winter Jazz Band concert will be Tuesday Nov 29th. The Winter Band concert will be Thursday Dec. 1st. It is imperative that students practice the music over the Thanksgiving break.

Party! – The band student council has put together an end of marching season / Halloween party. The Pride of Lamar has traditionally thrown a Halloween party at a band family house. This year, our schedule was too busy to do it in October. So, we figured we would do it right before our Thanksgiving break. It will be at the Dickey house this Friday Nov 18th. There are detailed flyers in the band room.

Marching Season – I wanted to continue to share some links with you for marching season. All the videos are listed in my school youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOyWs3QyWM_KCmH4lQQ165w

There are a lot of marching season photos on the Lamar Band website www.lamarmusic.org

Marching Season – This Saturday was our final competition this season. The USBands Remo Finale Series Championship was a success! I’m proud to say that we placed 2nd in Group IV open and won the outstanding color guard award! In finals we placed 5th overall! On a side note, we placed 2nd in the visual performance caption in finals! Please do not share this unlisted video of our performances.

Prelims – https://youtu.be/o1vUf21ZRBc

Finals – https://youtu.be/MNwci1zvytI

This is a wonderful way to end a stellar marching season. It took determination and dedication to make it to the end like we did. The students were working hard make changes Saturday afternoon before we went into our final performance. What a remarkable bunch of musical athletes!

I want to thank everyone for their contributions to the Pride of Lamar. I would like to give a special thanks to Mr. Zack Riley. I hired him as a part-time district employee to teach marching and drill to the marching band. Mr. Riley has gone FAR ABOVE AND BEYOND his contractual obligations. He puts in MANY more hours than we can afford to pay him. He is the true definition of PRIDE! He is an alumnus of the Lamar High School and a music education major. I have no doubt that Mr. Riley is going to be an incredible educator. We wish him well as he finishes his degree and start his student teaching.

Spring Trip – This spring, the band & orchestra will be traveling to Nashville! Trip contracts and info are available from Mr. Lang. The $150 deposit is due ASAP! Limited seats available for this year’s trip.

Volunteer Opportunity – The Shackelford band is hosting All-Region Phase 2 auditions for JH here at Lamar on Nov. 12th. They need about 30 total volunteers. They have some volunteers already from the Shack parents. They need more parents and students to help run the contest. The contest will run approximately from 7:00am to 2:00pm. Many of the volunteers will be done by noon. Please email Matt Nagel at mnagel@aisd.net if you can help. There is also a sign up in the band room.

Videos and memorabilia – I want to make sure the students have an opportunity to order the video from Area. I am going to share the video from USBands for free. Please remember, we have copyright licenses for this year’s show. We paid a lot of money for these copyright permissions, but we can’t share this on YouTube publicly or sell copies of our marching band performances.

CVP recorded high quality DVD’s and Blu-Ray’s of our Prelims performance. Go to this link to order https://cvpvideo.startlogic.com/UILAreaBL2016MainStep1.php

I wanted to pass on this optional information regarding patches. Many students collect patches during their years in HS band. These are to be attached to the letter jacket. Band students have the opportunity to “letter” in band after completing the Lamar Band/Color Guard “letter form”. It is in the back of the handbook for either band or color guard.

The attached pdf is information for the OFFICIAL UIL area patches. The link below is for USBands patches. The website that sells USBands patches and gear also sells UIL knock off patches. You are welcome to purchase or not whatever you desire. I just wanted to share the info. Dean Corey had patches for sale. The Dean Corey PTA usually has an order form also. I can contact them if you are interested in those patches.

USBands – FYI, we attended the Dallas Showcase in Burleson and the REMO finale Series is next week.

Rehearsals this week: Monday nothing 3:30-5:30 (ending early for Halloween), Tuesday 3:30-5:30 (changed due to jr high football on Cravens), Wednesday no practice (trip meeting @7), Thursday football vs Martin @ Cravens, and Friday 3:30-6:00.

UIL – I am very proud of the Lamar band and their performance on Saturday. The students had a very good performance at Area contest. It was fun and educational to see all the other bands perform as well. It’s great to be competing at this level again here at Lamar. We didn’t place as high as we had hoped, but it doesn’t change a thing about how a I feel about this special marching band season. I would also like to thank the Lamar principals, Mr. Hagman, Mr. Davis, Ms. Willis, and Ms. Haynes for coming out to support the band. CVP recorded high quality DVD’s and Blu-Ray’s of our Prelims performance. Go to this link to order https://cvpvideo.startlogic.com/UILAreaBL2016MainStep1.php Also, see last week’s midweek email for details on ordering patches.

Marching Season – This Saturday is our final competition this season. We will perform in Prelims at 2:45pm in Midlothian. This is the USBands Remo Finale Series Championship. Tickets available at the gate or from Mr. Lang this week until Saturday morning.

Contest meals – Scheduling meals for contests is often challenging. The logistics and timing of a contest can be impossible. Sometimes we will go to a variety of restaurants and let the kids bring money to eat on their own. Typically, that is about $5-10. The booster club can feed the students much cheaper. We ask that you send $10 with your student this week to Mr. Lang. This will cover the remaining marching contests meals for the season. Our favorite meal to serve is a sandwich line with many healthy options. Of course, if you have allergies or other special diets, please Mr. Lang or Mrs. Dickey know ASAP.

Jazz Band – On Nov. 9th, eat at Chipotle on North Collins. They will contribute for any sale made all day, 11:00 am till 10:00 pm. Make plans to eat lunch and maybe dinner too!

Fundraisers – Don’t forget that we are in the middle of our catalog fundraiser! Your child should have catalogs for Yankee Candle and Fredericksburg Farms.  There are a few more in the band hall if needed.

Yankee Candle items can also be ordered online. You can search items, order and pay, and your items will be shipped directly to you immediately (shipping costs will apply). Anytime people order online, even after Nov. 4, the band will benefit if they use our group number.
